Jobs may be under threat as Cornwall Council gets set to reduce the number of days libraries and One Stop Shops are open, including those in Falmouth and Helston, and to amalgamate some into one location.

To move is due to further budtget cuts, with a saving of £1.3million "needed" from these services.

At the Partnerships Portfolio Advisory committee meeting on January 7, councillors condidered "a range of options and recommendations as part of a review of the Council’s customer access services which includes Libraries, One Stop Shops, the telephone Contact Centre and customer payment options.

A spokesman said: "As part of the Council’s 2014/15 budget, around £1.3m savings need to come from a review of these services.

"Members at the PAC meeting agreed to plans for a reduction of opening hours, broadly an additional day per week, across the majority of Library and One Stop Shop sites subject to consultation with staff and unions.

"Work will also continue to look at the possibility of amalgamating stand alone one stop shops and libraries."

Cornwall Council cabinet member for partnerships Adam Paynter said: “In the coming weeks, we will be working with local members on the best way to implement the reduced opening times so as to minimise disruption to the local community.”
