Penryn town centre has reopened following a gas leak this morning.

Lower Market Street is now open to traffic, and a Wales and West Utilities engineer said the leak had been made safe.

Residents were earlier told to stay in their homes as engineers attempted to deal with a 'large' gas leak in Penryn.

Lower Market Street heading in the direction of the Penryn Community College had been closed. while travel down through the town towards Penryn Bridge remained unaffected.

A fire service spokesman said: "At 11:31 this morning Cornwall Fire and Rescue service received a call to a large gas leak coming from the pavement area outside the Terrace on Lower Market Street, Penryn.

"Five firefighters in a major appliance from Falmouth were immediately mobilised to the scene and Transco was requested to attend. The fire service identified the source of the gas leak and used dammit paste to attempt to make a temporary repair to the pipe.

"Police officers redirected traffic and closed the road outside the area of the Terrace. The occupants of properties adjacent to the gas leak were advised to remain in their properties but to keep their windows open to allow ventilation.

"At 12:08 this afternoon Wales and West Utilities engineers were in attendance along with a gang who will have to dig the road up and repair the damaged pipe.

Currently (12:50pm) Lower Market Street heading in the direction of the Penryn Community College has been closed. Travel down through the town towards Penryn Bridge is unaffected.

Engineers from Wales and West Utilities are repairing the gas leak at The Terrace.

Firefighters are standing-by and Cornwall Fire and  Rescue are asking people to avoid The Terrrace.

Bus services are diverted, with the University 1 service and 88 service, 41 service via Browns Hill and Commercial Road.
