Olympic sailing hero opens namesake leisure centre at Truro School
7:00am Friday 25th October 2013 in Cornwall
Sir Ben Ainslie has officially opened the new sports centre at Truro School.
Sir Ben is the most successful Olympic sailor in history, winning four consecutive Gold medals - one gained during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
He has recently made headlines with his win against New Zealand in the America’s Cup, but returned to his Cornish roots in order to officiate the grand opening of Truro School’s Sir Ben Ainslie Sports Centre.
With an investment of £4.2 million and taking 12 months to complete, the Sir Ben Ainslie Sports Centre is the largest sports facility in Truro, boasting an extensive range of amenities such as: two county standard and glass-backed squash courts with viewing gallery; a large fitness suite with state-of-the-art equipment; sprung wooden floor dance and exercise studio; five changing rooms; class room facilities; and an eight court badminton centre - one of the largest in Cornwall.
The new centre has been built for the pupils of the school as well as the wider community, costing only £15 a month to use.
Educated at Truro School, Sir Ben moved to Cornwall from Cheshire at an early age and learnt to sail in nearby Falmouth, before becoming a national sailing success - winning many gold medals within his career.
He is also a keen ambassador and role model for the sport, promoting sailing nationally whilst competing at the highest level.
Sir Ben said: "I am so flattered to be the namesake of this brilliant addition to the school as it will have such a positive impact on young people who are passionate about sport. I hope it will inspire and guide them towards their future goals as the support I received during my childhood in Cornwall did for me.”
Andrew Gordon-Brown, Headmaster of Truro School, said: “It is fantastic that we are able to provide such state of the art facilities, not only for our pupils but for the community as well. Having Sir Ben here today to officially open the new Sports Centre is a real honour as he represents that dreams can be realised with hard work – something we promote to our students throughout the school. ”
