Action on 'brazen' Helston town centre rats
6:00am Thursday 24th October 2013 in Cornwall
Brazen rats are scurrying around Helston with a devil may care attitude, town councillors heard last week, with steps needed to bring them under control.
Councillor Gillian Geer said that the town centre had a rat problem, with people coming into her shop and saying they had increasingly seen them “scurrying about” around the drains and kennels.
Adding that they were as “brazen as you like”, she said the problem was particularly noticeable after rain.
She said that while Cornwall Council used to put control measures in place, this did not happen anymore and the “upshot was that the rat problem was going mad”.
She called on the town council to write to Cornwall Council to find out how the town can get its “quota” of poison saying that if nothing is done and rats start to become ever more visible then all the hard work to sort out the centre of Helston would come to nothing and it would be seen as a “laughing stock”.
Councillors heard that the food source was likely to be fast food restaurants and other food sources in the town centre.
Cllr Williams agreed, saying that he had had reports of children playing in gardens and seeing rats, and while rats would always be around, action was needed.
A unanimous decision to write to Cornwall Council was made, with the council to ask what can be done, and whether this was something that the town council could take on. Councillors also want to find out who was the old ‘rat man’ for the town, to use his wealth of experience in how best to deal with the problem.
