World's greatest surfer to hand over SAS Protect Our Waves Petition to David Cameron
2:40pm Friday 11th October 2013 in Cornwall
A bid to protect surf spots will reach the corridors of power this month, as the world's greatest surfer knocks on the door of No 10 Dowing Street to hand over the Surfers Against Sewage Protect Our Waves petition.
Kelly Slater, eleven times world champion, and musician and surfer Ben Howard will be among the group from the charity that delivers the petition to Prime Minister David Cameron on October 22.
SAS says that the aim of Protect Our Waves petition is to generate at least 50,000 signatures, highlighting to the UK government the value of surfing waves and locations and encouraging MPs to debate legislation in order to recognise the importance of waves as a cultural, social, economic and environmental asset to coastal communities.
SAS believes that waves and surf spots deserve to be seen as part of UK heritage and should be afforded greater recognition and protection through debate and legislation.
Ben Howard, musician and surfer, said: “I'm stoked to support the Surfers against Sewage protect our waves petition. beaches and surf spots should be better protected."
