Helston man attacked pregnant partner after row over money to go drinking: JAILED
4:40pm Thursday 10th October 2013 in Cornwall
A pregnant woman who was terrified when her partner attacked her, punching her in the chest and back, had tried to protect herself and was left emotionally scarred by what happened Truro magistrates heard.
Her partner, whose record included harassment, actual bodily harm, battery and threatening behaviour, was Damian Paul Abraham, aged 29, of Hillcrest, Helston, who at a previous court had pleaded not guilty but was convicted of assaulting Gemma Spark and a child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, on December 31.
Graham Calderwood, for the CPS, said Abraham had demanded some money from Ms Spark as he wanted to go drinking but she did not want him to do that and told him to leave the house or she would call the police.
He swore at her, punched her as she ran upstairs while she was holding on to one of the children, which she put down, and then kept on punching her while she screamed at him to stop, being terrified and trying to protect her unborn child.
He then pushed one of their children, who fell over and hit his head on a vacuum cleaner and was screaming when he was told by Abraham to shut up or the neighbours would hear him.
Ms Spark said after the offence: “This horrific experience has left me emotionally scarred and my children also,” and said she was now wary of making friends.
Mark Charnley, for Abraham, said his client’s probation report had described him as man who was very self-focused and lacked insight, empathy and remorse.
Abraham was sent to prison for 20 weeks.
