Fun but no sun for Mawnan charity runners
7:00am Saturday 5th October 2013 in Cornwall
The misty weather wasn’t enough to put off almost 170 runners of all ages taking part in Mawnan Fun Run on Sunday.
At times it was hard to see the competitors coming into the finish but despite this everyone seemed to enjoy the event, which was organised by Falmouth Rotary Club for the second year running.
The one-mile children’s fun run was a hotly contested race, with only five seconds separating the first three runners over the line. Alexander McCartney triumphed in 5.29, closely followed by James Horton and Edward Mitchell.
First man home in the 10k race, in a time of 33.59, was Tony Brewer of Mile High Running Club and first female was Cassie Kent. The 5k was won by Justin Thomas, with Julia Pearce coming in as the first female, both of Cornwall AC.
A competition for best fancy dress was won by Louise and Matthew Buchanan, while the youngest competitor on the day was three-year-old Harry Philpott.
The event started and finished in Carwinion Playing Field in Mawnan Smith, where Gillian Sadler of Embrace Dance Fitness led a warm-up for the competitors prior to the race.
Refreshments and a variety of entertainments were laid on for runners and spectators after the event and the winners were presented with their prizes by James Carter, manager of Stratton Creber Estate Agents in Mawnan Smith, who were the main sponsors of the event.
Rotarian Rod Allday, chairman of the organising committee, said: “It was great to see so many people of all ages taking part and enjoying their run round Mawnan.
“The success of the event is down to a great team effort between Falmouth Rotary Club and a number of local volunteers in the village and we would like to thank all of our sponsors and the police cadets for their support.”
Early indications are that the event raised in excess of £1,000, which will be split between local youth organisations in the village and Rotary charities.
