Rare sight as 'notoriously shy' Osprey spotted over River Fal: PICTURE
4:50pm Monday 30th September 2013 in Cornwall
Wildlife watchers were treated to a rare sight at the weekend, after spotting an Osprey soaring over the Fal.
On Saturday’s trip AK Wildlife Cruises ventured up the estuary for the first time in months, due to severe sea weather conditions.
Richard Hollis from AK said as well as the grey seals fishing in the flooded mud flats, they were "astounded" by the high level of bird activity.
"Before we’d even left the mooring, a great northern diver flew overhead, these only come down to Cornwall to spend their winter, after breeding further north in Scotland. We found a few other wintering birds, but it breaks my heart to say it, as it’s only September. But being such beautiful birds, they more than make up for it.
"These included red breasted merganser, purple sandpiper and teal, a small species of duck with teal eye shadow.
"Sailing past some fishing pots and nets, our eagle eyed crew spotted a kingfisher sat on top of the heap, making a beautiful photograph and the first kingfisher for many of our guests.
He added that the "star of the show", an Osprey, made its entrance as they turned a corner and saw the bird of prey sitting on a branch watching us.
The notoriously shy bird is thought to have been making its way south to West Africa after spending the summer further north in the British Isles.
Kieth said: "The bird took to the wing and floated above the treeline before landing again in another tree. The ospreys don’t stay for long so we’re off out to make the most of them before they leave, as it was only recently that these have made a come-back after becoming extinct in Britain."
AK Wildlife Cruises operate for 12 months of the year from Falmouth with heated cabin, indoor and outdoor seating, hot drinks and modern toilet to offer the best wildlife watching trip.
