TV pig is star of the show at Gunwalloe farm open day
10:59am Thursday 5th September 2013 in Cornwall
A TV celebrity with a difference helped a Gunwalloe farm delight visitors to its third annual family open day on Sunday and make it its best yet.
Boris, possibly the UK’s largest pig who has made media headlines worldwide and weighs more than half a ton, proved popular at Chyvarloe Farm when more than 1,200 people flocked to enjoy a day of family fun.
What is believed to be the only on-farm farmers’ market in Cornwall was held, with a farm trail, face painting, tractor rides and demonstrations and the chance to meet the farm animals also on offer.
Farmer Paul Parfitt, who runs the mixed farm and farm produce delivery business with his partner Charlotte, said: “Boris, Tweety our emu and Godfrey our pet turkey all received a lot of attention.
“We are tremendously proud of everything the open day achieved and the farmers’ market was a runaway success, with 29 traders taking part.
“In actual fact we were over-subscribed and had to turn some traders down, so this is something we are going to address by using a third building and expanding the farmers’ market at our Christmas Open Day.”
A number of the traders taking part praised the event, including Helsett Dairy, which described the event as a “fabulous family day out that showed people behind the scenes of a working farm”, while Andy Howell from Specialised Charters said: “Having a real farmers’ market actually in a shed with cows is a superb idea.”
In the afternoon Mr Parfitt led a round bale silage making demonstration.
He said: “I have never driven a tractor round baling in front of an audience of more than 300 before.”
Chyvarloe Farm is a mixed farm, producing beef, lamb, pork and poultry plus fruit, vegetables and dairy.
