Anger as 'dummy' kayak hoax sparks expensive search
4:00pm Tuesday 20th August 2013 in Cornwall
Falmouth Coastguard say a hoax, where a kayak with home-made dummy was launched into the sea off North Cornwall, put lives at risk.
The Coastguards had a rash of emergency calls after the fake paddler was spotted by members of the public in the sea off Harlyn Bay.
After the launch of the Padstow lifeboat and a search team by Falmouth Coastguards, instead of a person in trouble at sea, they found a dummy with a football for a head and sticks for arms.
A spokesman said: "It was a complete waste of our time when there could have been someone in trouble somewhere else."
Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police, Shaun Sawyer added "It is shameful that someone would do this. It is not funny. There are a number of offences here.
"This is criminal behaviour, it is not funny. I would say to the individual, why not do us all a favour and report yourself."
