Organisers of this year’s charity Ladies Driving Challenge at RAF Portreath are hoping for bumper numbers, as this year will be the last of its kind.

After 15 years of the event, rising costs – particularly in insurance – mean that September 15 will mark the final one.

During that time the event has raised more than £250,000 towards the costs of providing Marie Curie nurses in Cornwall.

With the end in sight, it is the last chance for women who have always fancied driving a double decker bus, fire engine or steam engine – or those who want to face their fears by challenging themselves.

Entrants must be over the age of 18 and have held a driving licence for at least a year.

It costs £10 to enter, with those taking part asked to try and raise a target of £100 in sponsorship.

Jon Duckham, regional events manager for Marie Curie, said: “We have always been very lucky with the wide selection of vehicles that are on offer to drive and we owe all the individuals and companies that have supported the challenge over the years a huge debt of thanks.

“The venue as well, at RAF Portreath, is always brilliant and a wonderful backdrop and I shall miss the occasion greatly.”

For an entry form call 0845 052 4184 or visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/events to enter online. Marie Curie nurses provide specialist cancer care in people’s homes, throughout the day or night, 365 days a year, free of charge.
