A sneak peek of this week's Falmouth/Penryn and Helston Packets - out every Wednesday!

First up: A disability rights campaigner from Penryn has accused Cornwall Council of persecuting thousands of the poorest people in the county by dragging them to court for non-payment of council tax for which they were not liable last year.

Next, how controversial plans for the next phase of development at the Penryn university campus were due to be discussed at a public meeting as the Packet went to press last night (Tuesday). The Heart project involves opening up an acre of space between the media centre and the Exchange.

Falmouth Packet:

Dozens of friends and family gathered in Falmouth on Friday night to witness the launch of a one-of-a-kind boat built in memory of Christian “Chan” Vinnicombe who died in a car crash four years ago.

Will it be a walkway, or just lots of street furniture! Planning permission has been granted for the new Sainsbury’s store at Ponsharden, more than two years after it was first applied for. Protracted negotiations over the section 106 agreement and other conditions, delayed the progress of the application, but it has now been approved by Cornwall Council.

Falmouth Packet:

Read how within three days of being given an ASBO, a Penryn woman had already broken it by screaming and smashing things in her back garden.

Also, after more than 100 years, Falmouth no longer has its own branch of the Royal British Legion after the decision was made to disband it with members urged to join the Penryn branch.

--- MEANWHILE In this week's Helston Packet - out now!

A heated meeting of Porthleven Town Council descended into “complete and utter farce” on Saturday, leading to one member of the public being thrown out and the former deputy mayor resigning. It was the latest episode in a saga over a controversial planning application for Shrubberies Hill, where developer Mark Rowe wants to build 60 homes.

Falmouth Packet:

MP Andrew George has called upon the support of the Schools Minister to address the “cruel hoax” played on Helston Community College over its promised rebuild.

There are calls for St Keverne’s former sub-postmistress to receive a full apology, compensation and her job back after she was cleared of false accounting, with the prosecution offering no evidence against her.

Also, children in the Bulwark area of Helston could finally have their own play area by the end of the year. With the final go-ahead now just days away, an empty patch of ground on Bulwark Road is set to be transformed with swings, roundabout and multi-play unit, which are all “disability friendly".

Read how police officers and a search and rescue helicopter were scrambled to St Keverne on Friday evening following allegations of boiling |water being thrown in a man’s face.
