'Hat's' the way to raise funds for Helston food bank: PICTURES

First published in Cornwall

Forget rabbits, students at Helston Community College were pulling money out of hats last week, and all for a good cause.

They took part in a Wear a Hat for Helston Day, to raise funds for Helston and Lizard Foodbank.

This saw the teenagers donning all manner of hats and other imaginative costumes, including a beer bottle and a playing card, with one girl becoming The Cat in the Hat from Dr Seuss.

The students decided to take part after learning that three million children in the UK are said to live below the poverty line. They decided to support the Helston-based Mustard Seed charity and particularly its Helston and Lizard Foodbank project.

As a result of the day, food donations and a total of £779.25 were given by students.

The foodbank, which can be found in the Open Door Cafe in Wendron Street, aims to provide three days’ worth of non-perishable food, as well as confidential advice and support, to help those experiencing short-term crisis.

The charity covers an area of 111 square miles and a population of 31,000. The money raised will help the foodbank with its plan to open new distribution centres to help more people to access the service.|
