The police and paramedics were called to Sailors nightclub on Fore Street at 3.07am.

Early reports suggested that the man may have been stabbed - but Police Response Sergeant Regie Butler took to social networking website Twitter to set the record straight.

He said: "To clear things up and quash rumours no one has been stabbed in the incident overnight."

"Enquiries [are] ongoing," he added

Sgt Butler stressed that such incidents are "very rare in Newquay" and said that the number of assaults in the town actually fell last year.

Fore Street was closed for most of the morning for forensics investigations to take place.

A pool of blood was spotted outside the nightclub.

The police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone who saw anything relating to the death, or was in or near Sailors nightclub in the early hours of this morning, can call 101 quoting log 159 of 27/4/13.
