Body discovered in shed near Helston's Coronation Lake after fire

A body has been found in a burnt out shed near Helston's Coronation Lake.

At 10.40pm last night police officers, firefighters and ambulance personnel were called to a fire in woodland behind the lake, where there are two abandoned sheds.

When the fire was put out a body was found in the shed.

The police and fire service is currently conducting a joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Police tape surrounds half of the lake this morning.

Eyewitnesses said they saw an orange glow in the area of woods near to an old water wheel, just behind the lake, together with more blue flashing lights than they had ever seen before.

At least two fire engines, an ambulance and more than five police cars could be seen next to the lake.

This morning a lone police car remains at the scene, with an officer carrying out an investigation alongside crewmembers from Helston Fire Station.

Very sad to hear this! I know there is a retired navy homeless guy who sleeps in that shed, he loves life. This is extremely sad to hear as he was a very nice person.

This is very sad news.
There is a homelessness issue in Helston that I feel should be addressed. There was one man regularly sleeping in his car in the fairground car-park at one time, he told me he was homeless and his old car failed to start one morning so I used my jump leads that I carry in my car to start his car. He appeared very cold. It seems to me the homelessness issue in Helston is not recognised and addressed in the same way as it is in other towns.

I believe west cornwall as the highest rate of rough sleepers in britain outside of central london.
Maybe this sad and terrible event will bring the issue forward amd more provision will be forthcoming.

I'm not sure we can speculate who's the body was at this stage though?

On the point that people seem concerned about however, perhaps they would like to offer a room to these homeless guys that they have seen? It's all ''very sad'' to hear but I'll bet no-one is prepared to shelter them in their houses?

Some of these homeless guys are very independant and would not take an offer of a room . To some of them its their way of life which they accept. As for me personally ,i would not have the room anyway. We should not assume it was a homeless person i agree .

I actually object to your remark GrahamHarris because when my husband was alive we had a homeless man who was unknown to us living with us for a long time as my two children were young at the time and therefore could share a bedroom so that we could have a spare bedroom, I fought his case with the council to get him housed and went to great lengths to get him set up with furniture etc. I am now a widow live in a two bedroomed property and have my elderly mother living with me so am not in a position financially or otherwise to do the same at this time.

Then that's very commendable GZM. I was just pointing out that so many people say ''oh what a shame'' or ''it's terrible'' but no-one does anything about it. It's not always up to the Council or the Government to pay for and do things.

You took action yourself and that's a good thing - not many people do.

Thank you, I am not saying it was easy particularly as I had to safeguard the welfare of my children as well, the guy used to smoke Cannabis which I had to establish ground rules that I would not tolerate it in my house and he also had suicidal tendencies ie cutting his wrists etc. All in all, looking back on things I don't know how I coped with two children, a husband on shift work, a dog and a suicidal non paying 'lodger' when I finally managed to get him housed in a flat I still continued to support him and he still visited us a lot, it was however a learning curve for me, and if I had the house room and the money I would actually do it again.
I know it is not always up to the council or government to do everything and money is not readily available, that is why I have always tried to be as independent as possible and to fight for what I believe in and not sit back and expect everyone else to do everything.

if you see or know someone who is homeless you can ring 08001513441 and a member of the reach out team from st petrocs will endeavour to make contact with this person. not all homeless people want the accommodation that may be available to them. this is for several reasons. if you want to help the homeless call that number or donate to a homeless charity. st petrocs are always grateful for food, clothing, bedding, toiletries, money donations.

Seeing comments above, the person who was at the shelter at the bottom is now in Falmouth, well that is the last I heard. The person caused in this awful report, liked his lifestyle and a charity (not sure what one) was actually donating a caravan to him. There is another homeless man living in the moors (woods at the bottom of Helston).

I've thought about taking a homeless person in but to be honest with you I was worried about the smell and my possessions being stolen. I think what you did Gill was both saintly and bonkers. My very unsaintly attitude, I hasten to add, does not mean I am judgemental of homeless people in the way that I am judgemental of people whose wardrobe offends my eye - backward facing baseball caps, trainers and the like - I am surprisingly sympathetic towards the homeless considering my selfish aversion to sharing my home with them.
I'm not altogether convinced St Petrocs has got it right either, as they spend huge amounts of money doing property up when they don't need to.
Finally I think that tax funded organisations should help the homeless not organisations reliant on donations. And we, the better off, should pay more tax in order for this to happen. I'll dismount from my high horse now...

Lol, I am probably bonkers molesworth but taking in someone who was homeless was probably relatively one of my more sane ideas.

(Unlike my building a bridge out of some dumped old car tyres in a car-park idea, to go across a huge ditch so that I could drive over it to get out of a car-park a different way, because someone had parked blocking me in from behind) It worked though.

For anyone who does consider taking in a homeless person, I was just pointing out that it is not always as simple as it may seem at first, I didn't really think that far ahead when I did it, but not one to quit easily having done it,I was determined to see it through. Like I previously said, I would actually do it again if I was in a position to because I gained valuable experience from it. I considered it a two way deal.

Do we have any updates from the fire service or the police as to the cause of the fire ? or the identity of the person ? This is a tragic thing to have happened.

there was a homeless place in mullion, but regettably, the people running it abused the trust of the owners and invited their mates from a city to come down for a free holiday.....out of 10 residents i was the only cornishman (person!!) living there-i'm a helstonian by birth and as such led the flora dance-time i got mie own high horese,methinks-anyw
ay,st.petrocs IS a good charity, unlike another christian outfit, which only prays for gods guidance, and don't help-despite having the fiscal and accom. to do so except if they get divine approval-i ran a homeless guest house some years back and the upset/distress it caused the patrons was shocking-the problem is statute based,if anyone is not expecting(i loathe and abhorr the term pregnant)or has young kids, then tough-here endeth my take on war and peace.....
