Truro is set to play host to its first ever electric car rally in celebration of recent government announcements in support of low-carbon motoring.

Cornish car dealer Hawkins Motors are running the event, on Sunday March 17, which starts from Lemon Quay in the city.

More than 25 vehicles will meet here from 10am for the largest gathering of eco-friendly cars ever witnessed in the county before setting off along the 26-mile course to St Austell at 1pm.

The cars will pass Trelissick Gardens, catch the King Harry Ferry and carry on to The Cornwall Hotel in Tregorrick (St Austell).

The event celebrates the recent announcement that up to 75 per cent of the cost of installing charging points for electric vehicles in garages and driveways will soon be covered by government grants.

Johnny Hawkins, director of Hawkins Motors, said: "Electric motoring is here and it’s here to stay, proving to customers that it’s not just about being eco-friendly, there are huge savings to be made for Cornish families.

“We are on the cusp of an electrical revolution. With low emissions and the ability to travel up to 90 miles for £1.90, electric vehicles could be the perfect fit for our conscience and our wallets.

“We’re inviting everyone along to witness this one-off event - come and be a part of the future!”

Supported by Ecodrive, a leading UK independent advisors on electric vehicle infrastructure, the Electric Car Rally is set to be a real occasion for Cornwall.
