Young farmers from Helston and St Keverne YFC were treading the boards rather than stepping in muck at the weekend when they took part in a drama performance.

The members were competing against other clubs in the area for a place in the next round of a YFC drama competition.

Last Thursday’s club meeting acted as the final dress rehearsal when the ten cast members performed to the rest of the club – for the first time in costumes, which helped the actors get into character.

On Saturday the cast, together with director Mel Drew and the backstage hands, headed to St Ives for a last practice on stage before the performance later that evening.

St Buryan YFC started the competition off with an entertaining drama and it was then Helston’s turn to take to the stage.

Frances Hosken, club reporter and cast member, said: “The drama all went to plan and everyone came off stage relived and pleased with their performance.”

Wadebridge finished the evening off with their drama, before the judges gave a few comments on performance.

On Sunday a few of the club members travelled up to Liskeard to watch three more dramas, including Liskeard, Launceston and St Mabyn – and more importantly to hear the results.

All the practise paid off for Helston and St Keverne, as they went through to the next round along with St Mabyn and Wadebridge YFC.

The next round will take place this Saturday, February 9 at the St Johns Hall in Penzance, starting at 7.30pm.

Away from the drama, tomorrow (Thursday) will see members bagging up dung ready to sell on Saturday, February 23 for the annual charity dung run. The dung, which can be used as fertiliser on gardens, can be ordered in advance and delivered on the day by calling Christina Jenkin on 01326 231327.
