Helston and Falmouth young farmers' mammoth charity bike ride

Two young farmer friends from Budock and Helston are literally going the extra mile on a women’s only charity cycling challenge.

Not content with “just” cycling across Sri Lanka, Jenna Chamberlain and Sue Reynolds are doubling their trip by adding the return journey from London to Land’s End onto their cycle ride – making a total of 800km.

They have responded to an appeal by infertility expert Lord Professor Robert Winston to raise funds to improve the health of women and babies.

Jenna, aged 23, and a member of Falmouth YFC, and 26-year-old Sue, who lives in Helston and is a member of Praze YFC, met when their clubs joined to perform a pantomime together.

They decided they wanted a challenge and took inspiration from the “WotNot” cycle ride carried out each year by YFC members.

It was while researching charity cycling trips that the pair came across Genesis, a charity that raises money for research to help women and babies.

This looks to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a range of devastating conditions that cause miscarriage, genetic diseases, infertility and cancer.

Sue said: “We both know women who can’t conceive or who have had miscarriages and you never know what to say, so this is our support for them.

“Hopefully the money we raise will help with prevention as well as cure.”

Jenna and Sue will cycle approximately 400km from Negombo to Habarana and finishing in Kandy, over five days in late September and early October.

They will then get back on their bikes to cycle home from London.

The girls need to raise a minimum of £7,000 to fund medical research work at a major research institute at Hammersmith Hospital in London, and they are asking local people and companies to help meet and surpass their target.

“This is going to be a tough challenge, but we know that the end result will be fantastic and that it will go on to help so many people.

“We please ask all our friends and family to help us in this by donating whatever they can, and by supporting us at the fundraisers we plan on doing throughout the year.”

Jenna and Sue will be cycling around the Helston and Falmouth areas in preparation for the challenge, and also plan to have several fundraising events over the next few months.
