An ongoing campaign to clean up dog mess in Mullion has seen progress, with three tasks on a five point plan to tackle the issue already underway.

Following pressure from the Mullion Dogs' Mess Campaign group, the parish council has agreed to produce and distribute leaflets in the village, and put up posters designed by the campaigners, to raise awareness of the problem.

Cornwall Council will also supply biodegradable bags for dog mess for sale at Mullion Post Office and other shops in the village area. These could previously be bought from Helston's One Stop Shop but nowhere in Mullion.

The campaign group is now pushing for the remaining two points on their list to be carried out: to review the locations of dog mess bins and general littler bins, and relocate if necessary - particularly on the coast path - and add these locations on a new village map that should be installed in the village's two car parks and used widely.

A petition created by the campaign group was signed by more than 500 people in just two weeks - around one quarter of the village's population.

The signatures were provided by both residents and visitors, with comments about the dog mess including “Horrible” and “Puts me off visiting the village again”, with Mullion described as a “pretty village spoiled by dogs' mess.”

Louse Martin, of the group, said: “This is an issue that has gone on too long. We believe it will have a negative impact on the local economy by putting off visitors in the tourist season, if left in the same situation.

“Over the last year individuals have written to the parish and unitary council, the Mullion in Bloom group have made complaints, the MP has been contacted and the local dog warden has been engaged. Still nothing has changed.

“We need to be clear that this needs to be not the beginning of reporting the issue - but rather the beginning of solving the problem.”

Members are continuing to urge supporters of their cause to keep Mullion free of dog mess by writing to councillors and joining their Facebook group “Dog's Mess in Mullion” or contacting them via mullioncampaign@gmail.com
