Photographer's Lizard Lifeboat donation is not for dummies
10:00am Friday 7th December 2012 in Cornwall
There are no dummies at The Lizard lifeboat station, but there is a brand new rescue mannequin for the team.
Donated thanks to well-known local photographer Geoff Squibb, the “dummy” will give RNLI volunteers a chance to practice searching for people missing out at sea.
Geoff has worked alongside The Lizard lifeboat crew for more than two years while compiling a book about the rebuild of the lifeboat station in Kilcobben Cove, taking nearly 7,000 photographs in the process.
He has now used some of the proceeds from the book, entitled “Kilcobben’s Rose”,to buy some essential rescue equipment. All 1,000 copies sold out in less than six months.
At a dinner at the Mullion Cove Hotel last Saturday night he presented coxswain Andrew Putt and mechanic Dan Atkinson with the rescue manikin He also presented each member of the crew with a new jacket that displays the station name and logo.
Coxswain Andrew Putt said: “This has been a fantastic evening. All the crew feel really privileged that Geoff decided to put together a book about the rebuild.
“We have now benefitted twice, as we have an outstanding record for the future demonstrating what was involved in the rebuild and now Geoff has presented us with an important training resource which will benefit the station for many years to come.”
The evening also saw Daphne Skinnard, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, present some members of the lifeboat crew with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal.
A number of the crew were eligible to receive the award as they have served on the lifeboat for over five years.
Anyone wanting to support the lifeboat and have a look around the new lifeboat station and meet the crew, a carolaire at the station in Kilcobben Cove, The Lizard will be at 7pm on Friday, December 7.
St Keverne Choir and Landewednack School choir will be performing. For information contact 01326 290451 or Pat on 01326 290760.
