Helston’s parish church will stand as a beacon at the top of the town this festive period thanks to the work of one parishioner.

John Boase has made and given to St Michael’s Church an illuminated cross for the tower, which is seen from all parts of Helston.

This will be switched on at the same time as the town’s Christmas lights, this Friday evening. Last year the cross was not lit and Canon David Miller said that a number of people rang him to ask why.

The new cross is 1.6m high and includes 500 LED lights.

Using only 12 volts of electricity, the cross is much safer and cheaper to run than the old one, with Mr Boase adding it was “eco friendly.”
