New Truro events to mark Remembrance Day

The Royal British Legion in Truro has added two new events to its calendar to mark Remembrance Day this year.
The Truro Poppy Launch will take place at High Cross today, Thursday (October 25) at 2pm while the Poppy Concert will take place on Sunday (October 28) at 7.30pm.
Truro Male Voice Choir will be putting on the concert at the Church of Our Lady of the Portal and St Piran in St Austell Street. The cost is £5 per person. The Poppy Launch will mark the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War and the Bishop of Truro, the Rt Rev Tim Thornton, will bless the crosses. The annual Field of Remembrance dedication will then take place on Sunday, November 4, at 11.45am at the eastern end of Truro Cathedral. There will be light refreshments afterwards for invited guests.
Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday will be marked with a ceremony at 2.30pm on November 11, with the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall laying the first wreath. The cathedral service will begin after the parade at 3.15pm.
Meanwhile, the Legion’s Falmouth branch will begin the annual appeal with a poppy laying ceremony at the town’s Remembrance Garden.
The ceremony will take place at 10.45am on Saturday.
Events planned for the two weeks include a concert featuring the Nankersey Male Choir at Penryn Methodist Church on Friday, November 9, starting at 7.30pm.
On Remembrance Sunday, November 11, there will be a gathering at Penryn Town Hall at 10.15am prior to a procession to St Gluvias Church where a service will be held. Refreshments will be available for guests on return to the town hall. Also in Penryn, there will be an Act of Remembrance at 10.50am at the Memorial Gardens, in Quay Hill, which will be attended by the mayor and Navy guests.
Admission is free but donations are appreciated to support the Poppy Appeal even further.
In 2011 the Poppy Appeal raised more than £400,000, and the legion is hoping to raise more than £500,000 this year. The charity currently spends £200,000 a day on welfare support. In addition, the Legion has committed £50 million over the next ten years to equipping and running recuperation centres.
