NORTH PETHERTON town councillors voted to recommend objecting a housing application that aims to bring 75 new dwellings to the area.

The councillors at the planning committee on Monday night (February 19) decided there were four grounds to base the recommendation of refusal on.

Persimmon Severn Valley applied to Sedgemoor District Council for up to 75 dwellings including new vehicular access off of A38, public open space, landscaping and drainage structure, on land near to North Petherton Rugby Club.

Four issues were raised including lack of specific consultation, road access, open space, and potential 'over development'.

Cllr Phillip Spencer voiced concerns that the structure of the housing development would close off opportunities for future developments.

"There should be a roundabout," He said.

"Eventually, it will link to the North Newton road. We should have the possibility of a feeder road."

Cllr Linda Hyde agreed that some thought needed to be given to future developments.

She said: "It's inevitable the land will all be developed.

"Why can't they do it with a view to benefit the community. It doesn't have to be 75 houses, it's high density.

"Although I am pleased to see affordable housing and one bedroom properties."

Cllr Bill Revans asked whether of not the development constituted 'over development' of the area.

He also stated his disappointment that Persimmon had not consulted with the neighbours to the site.

He said: "They haven't spoken to rugby club when I specifically told them to."

Concern was also given to the 'green space' on the development, that consists of a pound at the bottom of the site.

Cllr Marion Denham said: "We are all prepared to have something built.

"But we've got to do what's best for North Petherton, now and in the future."
