FLASHING signs warning drivers of their speed could be coming to a road near you.

Towns and villages with a history of speeding can apply to use the speed indicator devices for two weeks in a bid to stamp out the problem.

Anti-speeding campaigners have welcomed the £200,000 investment from the county council to improve road safety.

Roger Stoakley, who has called for safety measures in and around Adsborough for a number of years, believes signs would be invaluable across many areas.

He said: “They’d be very useful and, given the amount of accidents, it’s evident that people need to watch their speed.

“Though drivers won’t be penalised for speeding I think the signs will still work.

“When it pops up and shows what speed you’re doing it does make you stop and think.

“I’ve noticed them in villages in North Somerset and they seem to be very effective.”

The signs record every vehicle’s speed, regardless of whether the warning message is activated, but do not take any other details.

Creech St Michael Parish Council chairman Clare Sampson said: “We’re very much in favour of the signs and hope they’ll improve safety on our roads.

“The data they record can be used to lobby Somerset County Highways.

“We hope to get them at two sites – the road through to Creech Heathfield and St Michael’s Road.”

The devices will spend up to two weeks at a location and will not be installed in the same place within four months.

Harvey Siggs, county council cabinet member for highways, said: “This is a great opportunity for towns and villages to help us make their communities safer places, and to be more involved in helping to manage the roads where they live.”

Waste of money. All they do is frighten the driver to death thinking he has missed a camera, thus distracting him from his previous concentration on the road ahead. The only speed deterrent is humps or give way/priority arrows with one way through.

Better surely that they be "frightened to death" than CAUSE a death?

Yep, couldn't agree more-a complete waste of money. There is no deterrent on our roads due to Police cuts, drivers are aware of this and just ignore basic stuff like wearing seat belts. Traffic signs are just decoration to most......start penalising idiot drivers rather than letting them get away with it and things will change. Tory manifesto of giving the roads back to the motorist is akin to giving a two year old a machine gun-or George Osbourne the Chancellor's job!

I am in favour of anything that reduces speed. living in a tiny village not even deemed worthy of a 'slow' sign I am only too aware of the total disregard of some drivers to the safety of residents. Our problem is caused mostly by speeding tractors and 4 x 4's, as some lanes approaching the village are only a tractors width walking can be a hazardous experience. All villages should have a 20 MPH speed limit. It may only be our pets that are killed at the moment, next time it may be a child.

This countries way speed is dealt with breeds resentment and a feeling that its a revenue exercise.

If all speeders lost a day or two of their time being educated not force fed the highway code stopping distances which are meaningless to most and very old they date back to the 60s.

If you 4 second following gap as a good advanced traffic police officer should be taught.

Break speed into metres per second as how many people can pace a mile and measure an hour without a watch
