Woman remains in critical condition after six injured in crash near Ilminster

SIX people including a six-month-old baby were injured in a head-on collision near Ilminster last night (October 6).

Police were called to reports of the crash between a Vauxhall Astra and Vauxhall Corsa carrying five people on the B3168 at Bay Hill near Dillington at 10.40pm.

Fire engines from Ilminster, Chard, Taunton and Yeovil were called and crews removed the roofs of both cars to free two casualties who were severely trapped.

Four helicopters, including two police helicopters and an air sea rescue helicopter were used to evacuate the casualties.

The woman driving the Corsa was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth with multiple life-threatening injuries and remains in a critical condition.

A man was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton with chest injuries and two 15-year-old boys were taken to Frenchay and Yeovil District hospitals. Their condition is not reported to be life-threatening. 

The baby who was also travelling in the Corsa was released after receiving medical treatment.

The female driver of the Astra was taken to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol with a serious head injury and is in a stable condition.

Police closed the road to carry out detailed examinations of the scene until 6am today.

An appeal for witnesses has been issued by the collision investigation unit.
