A YOUNG couple with “everything to live for” have died on a notorious stretch of road near Taunton.

Sophie Lack, 19, and her boyfriend, Luke Porter, 22, died after the car they were in crashed on the A38 as they drove in the direction of Taunton at 10.30am on Sunday morning.

Police said Sophie and Luke were travelling in a Vauxhall Astra near Thurloxton and had passed a Peugeot RCZ shortly before losing control and striking a tree.

Campaigners say the stretch of road is notorious and the incident was a disaster waiting to happen.

Adsborough and Creech St Michael district councillor Kelly Durdan said she had been campaigning to Somerset County Council for years to get road safety improvements further along the road at Adsborough.

She said: “Around two years ago we paid for a consultant to have a look at the road and he picked up a few points that needed to be changed.

“The county council does not listen and either say there is a lack of money or that there have been no fatalities. Something needs to be done now that we have the development at Monkton Heathfield because, otherwise, it is only going to get worse.”

Sophie and Luke worked at Robert Wiseman Dairies in Bridgwater. A spokesman for the company said the loss has come as a shock to everyone at the site.

Two people were arrested in the aftermath of the incident but have since been released with no further action taken.

Tributes to the couple have been left on social networking sites.

Sarah Edwards, writing on Facebook, said: “You had so much to live for, both of you. May heaven give you that life-long holiday you and Luke have been planning.”

A Somerset County Council spokesman said an investigation into the incident has been launched and declined to comment further.

Any witnesses should call police on 101.
