Two more weeks of roundabout roadworks in Chard
11:40am Wednesday 26th September 2012 in News
ROADWORKS at a busy roundabout in the centre of Chard, which are causing major problems for motorists and businesses, should be finished by October 12.
The Wales and West Utilities has said that they are currently carrying out an essential gas mains replacement scheme in East Street which will help ensure a secure supply to homes and businesses in the area.
Although it was thought that work was scheduled to finish this weekend, a company spokesman has told the News that it will not be concluded until a couple of weeks time.
"The second phase of the work began on September 10 and is due to be completed by October 12," they said.
The roundabout at the East Street, Crewkerne Road, Tapstone Road and Victoria Avenue junction is currently marshalled by four sets of traffic lights and business owners have said that the work is costing them money in a loss of passing trade.
But the Wales and West Utilities spokesman added: "For the safety of road users, pedestrians and the workforce involved in the project, temporary traffic lights are in place at the Victoria Avenue roundabout for the duration of the work.
"This traffic management plan has been agreed with Somerset County Council. We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience this essential work may cause.
"The work forms part of our multi-million pound 30-year replacement programme across the south west of England and Wales where we are replacing old metal pipes within 30 metres of buildings with highly durable, non-corroding plastic pipes with a lifespan of more than 80 years."
Work is due to finish on October 12 - the day before Chard Carnival which starts, ironically, at the roundabout!
