Ilminster toasts its good citizens
8:00am Thursday 20th September 2012 in News By Jamie Brooks
THE good people of Ilminster were rewarded last week for their efforts in making the town such a beautiful place to live.
The town council held its annual presentation evening at the Shrubbery Hotel on Thursday with an impressive gathering celebrating the achievements of the prize winners.
Ilminster Mayor Cllr Roger Swann presented the Citizen’s Award 2012 to John Goodall for his tireless efforts in a number of community organisations.
John is the secretary and chairman of the Ilminster branch of the Royal British Legion, and also helps run the town’s community speedwatch as well as leading the Ilminster Forum litter picking group.
Cllr Swann said: “John carries out these activities and many more in a quiet, industrious manner, not seeking any recognition other than the satisfaction of living in a safe and tidy town.”
This year’s Mayor’s Award went to a true Ilminsterian – Mike Holtom, who over the years has served the town in many roles.
He sat on Ilminster Urban District Council from the 1960s and transferred to Ilminster Town Council in 1974 under the local government re-organisation.
He was actively involved in chairing various committees before finally becoming chairman of the town council in 1985 and 1986.
Mike is now Parish Paths Liaison Officer for Ilminster Town Council, and is often seen walking the town’s footpaths and bridleways.
Cllr Swann said: “Mike has never sought recognition or reward other than the joy of seeing the town of Ilminster and its citizens’ lives being enhanced. “Over many years Mike has made his mark on Ilminster and the town is the better for it.
“I see it as an honour and a privilege to present him with the Mayor’s Award for 2012.”
Together with the high profile awards, this summer’s garden and scarecrow competition winners were also presented with their prizes.
