Chard History Group book coming together

A MAJOR revision of a book looking at the history of Chard during the ‘war years’ is to be published over the next few months.

The history group is completing its revised publication of ‘The War Years’ which has been compiled and edited by Mark Hambrey.

The original book, which contained only extracts from the Chard and Ilminster News editions between 1939 and 1945, has been significantly expanded.

Mark said: “The new book contains information regarding the Second World War names included on the Chard War Memorial and on the War Graves website.

“Research has been conducted and, where possible, an explanation of the reasons for their inclusion is given.”

The book also contains an authoritative chapter explaining the defences around Chard during the war and describes the experiences of several Chard people at the time.

One chapter links Chard events to the major events and conflicts of the war, and another has an introduction by the head of history at Holyrood Academy.

Mark added: “In all the book contains seven chapters making it a very interesting document and hopefully it should be published by the end of the year.

“It is hoped that the book can be used as a basis for further research as well as being of general interest.”

Chard History Group is grateful to David Hunt, of Holyrood Academy, and the people of Chard who have so willingly helped in the compilation of the book.
