Thorncombe WI ladies pay visit to vineyard

WINE-TASTING concluded a trip to the Furleigh Estate Vineyard for women’s institute members.

The group enjoyed a guided tour of the vineyard at Salway Ash, just outside Bridport.

More than 22,000 vines grow on the south-facing slopes of the estate and the tour guide talked about the grape varieties grown and the six essential stages and processes the vines go through each year.

Ann Hood, of the group, added: “We then went to the winery where the grapes when harvested are pressed, stored and bottled and learned of the many different processes in these operations.”

The award-winning winery produces 60,000 bottles of sparkling classic cuvee each year and 10,000 bottles of red, rose and white wine. English wines are now well respected in the world of viticulture and the UK now has 440 vineyards.

Ann said: “The tour concluded with members tasting the different varieties of wines produced – ending a very pleasant afternoon.”
