THE South-West’s best joinery student is this week pitting his skills against the nation in the finals of SkillBuild 2012.

Matt Baker, who is studying bench joinery at Somerset College, Taunton, and is an apprentice with Ilminster firm A&C Joinery, won his regional heat earlier this year.

He’s now in Preston to compete in the national finals against the best trainees in the country.
The three-day competition, which started yesterday Wednesday, is staged by CITB-Construction- Skills, the Sector Skills Council and Industry Training Board for the construction industry.

It sees over 100 talented individuals battling to be crowned best in their field in skills from carpentry and joinery to bricklaying, painting and decorating.

Rachel Davies, principal of Somerset College, said: “We’re extremely proud of Matt and the success of our apprenticeship partnership with his employer. We wish him every success.”
