Ilminster people shine in gas emergency

MORE people from Ilminster have contacted the News wanting to thank those who helped out following an evacuation of property last week.

A number of homes were evacuated on Friday, August 31, following fears of a gas explosion when a silver Renault Clio collided with a wall near the junction of Winterhay Lane and Station Road and a gas main was ruptured.

Ursula Montgomery, of Station Road, said that in addition to the areas mentioned last week the entire estate between the Texaco Petrol Station, Station Road, Riec-sur Belon Way, Canal Way and the footpath back to Station Road (72 houses) was also evacuated.

Ursula said: “Those who did not have relatives or friends to collect them were told to go to the Minster Rooms, dogs and all. By the time we arrived there, volunteers were ready to serve hot drinks and biscuits, and they were available until we received the ‘all clear’ at about 1.30 a.m.

“We were all very grateful for their service, and I would like to say a big thank you to all concerned.”
