Cold callers alert in Curry Rivel

THIS is just one of the signs put up along roads into Curry Rivel to warn cold callers they are not welcome.

The ‘Cold Calling Zone’ was set up along the A378 at Burton Dairy Farm, Red Hill, Currywoods Way, Sandpits Hill, Drayton Lane and Lower Wiltown and is also monitored by the police communications centre at Portishead.

Chairman of the group, Michael Cook, said: “While the signs cannot prevent or prohibit cold calling, they do signal to rogue traders, cowboy builders and would-be distraction burglars who call uninvited on householders (especially the old and vulnerable) that they are not welcome in the village.

“As the sign says, if you are troubled by unwanted doorstep traders, call the police on 101 and quote ‘cold calling’.”

Legitimate callers such as charity collectors, religious and political canvassers and private/public utility representatives (who should all produce ID) are still free to visit.

The project was jointly arranged by the Parish Council and Neighbourhood Watch, supported by the police and approved by Highways and Planning.

BT and Western Power have also permitted the signs to be placed on their poles.
