Celebrations in Cossington over playing field award

THERE were scenes of celebration in Cossington following an award which will help preserve the village playing field for future generations.

The playing field has become the first in Somerset to receive Queen Elizabeth II status - which will give it unique access to grant funding.

Excited children joined a ceremony at the playing field on Wednesday, where The Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Lady Gass, who is president of the Somerset Playing Fields' Association, unveiled a commemorative plaque.

Cossington is also set to join a scheme which aims to ensure future developments do not harm its unique character.

A four-week consultation has begun on a Cossington Village Design Statement - which planners will look at before making decisions on future developments.

Cossington's proposed VDS - which was drawn up by villagers - stresses housing developments should include off-road parking and should not encroach on green spaces.

To have your say on the VDS, click here or visit Sedgemoor District Council's offices in King Square, Bridgwater.

The consultation closes at 5pm on October 5.
