Work set to start at Minehead's Regal Theatre
Minehead Amateur Theatrical Association (MATA) launched the Lift Off project to modernise a section of The Avenue and work that will cost £250,000 starts on Monday (September 10).
The entrance will be overhauled to create a dramatic presence on the street and a new lift will enable less mobile people to get to the auditorium.
MATA chairman Ray Tew said: “The refurbishment will help fulfil our vision to provide, sustain and develop a wide variety of high quality performance for people in Mine-head and West Somerset, as well as for visitors.
“It will also enable increased income and sustainability with spin-off benefits to the economy and two sectors of importance to the area – creative industries and tourism. The project will contribute to the regeneration of Minehead by helping to create a more vibrant and vital town centre.
“Through the improved box office and foyer it will enable an improved physical presence, visibility and connection with the outside street, improve marketing of the cultural offer to the wider community.”
West Somerset Council agreed to give £50,000 to the association from its Seaside Strategy Funding pot earlier this summer to match its vision to make the town a premier cultural venue.
A shortfall still exists but work will go ahead and the theatre is expected to open in time for the Christmas pantomime.
Mr Tew added: “A small amount of funds still needs to be found, which the board is currently working on. The time is now.”
