Chard town crier gives the Great British summer a shout

CHARD town crier Stuart Cumming. CHARD town crier Stuart Cumming.

CHARD’S town crier has lots to shout about this week – after competing against other criers from across England and Wales.

Stuart Cumming was runnerup in the competition in Seaton on Saturday, the day of the town’s carnival.

Twelve competitors had to perform two cries – the first a hometown cry, which gave Stuart a chance to promote Chard, and the second was a free choice.

Stuart decided to shout in rhyming couplets about the Great British summer – and how it seems to have rained since July 1. The announcements had to be between 75 and 125 words and were judged on volume, dictation and content.
