YES to solar farm, NO to 187 homes YES to solar farm, NO to 187 homes

A GIANT solar farm in Bridgwater the size of 20 football pitches has been given the go-ahead today.

Sedgemoor District Council’s development control committee approved Wessex Solar Energy’s bid for a 75,000-panel solar farm on three fields south of Durleigh Hill, subject to several conditions.

However, at the same meeting, the committee rejected a major housing application in west Bridgwater.

David Wilson Homes’ bid for 187 homes on land off Haygrove Farm had been recommended for approval by a council planning officer, but it was voted down by the committee.

Sense prevails. Its about time other areas of sedgemoor had their fair share of housing developments. What about Axbridge and Highbridge having some new estates.

At the Ecopark public meeting on 8th August the public were told that they couldn't oppose the ecopark because of their concerns over linked housing development. 13 days later, David Wilson Homes offer a huge wad of money towards the ecopark if allowed to build nearly 200 houses with sole access opposite the entrance to Haygrove School. Thank heavens that some councillors had the integrity to judge the housing application on its (lack of ) merit alone. It was a close vote but the right decision.

It won't be long before the developers try again, once all the brown envelopes are handed out the voting will swing.

cant believe somebody used the words "councillors" and "integrity" in the same sentence.
they are the most corrupt people that exist.

Agree with all the above especially Phil Cross. Money waved by large corporations under the noses of councillors invariably leads to 'us the people' becoming collateral damage. Integrity leaves the human psyche when power becomes conscious.

It just seems to me that it is fine to build houses everywhere in Bridgwater but NOT in Durleigh. Bearing in mind this decision was against officer advice; on very flimsy politically motivated grounds; in effect all Council tax payers will pay when the decision is appealed won and costs awarded against Sedgemoor. I do not think it shows "integrity" on behalf of Tory Councillors to impose hundreds or even thousands of new houses on the people of South Bridgwater and North East Bridgwater where they have no votes but not on the Tory voting people of Durleigh.

I could not agree more.

Its a total fallacy that everyone in Durleigh is a Tory, Labour's vote at the last council elections was big up here.
I work with people from all over town, the ill educated Sun readers are the ones who vote Tory where I work.

They believe the Sun and Daily Mail propaganda rags.
Most of them live in the Bower manor area.
I could find you 50 labour voters in my street, and that street is in Durleigh.
It seems some of you would like another 180 ( no doubt large houses) built partly on a flood plain.
If you didn't want new houses built in your areas then perhaps you should have had the balls to try and stop them being built.

But no, you sit there, except them and then moan afterwards! Typical.

A terrific and resounding vote for common sense and listening to the electorate of Bridgwater. Our town is fast becoming over developed without the infrastructure needed to support it.

Well done Councellors from all political persuasions who made the decision not to accept the Planners advice. Clearly they could see the detrimental and premature effect of allowing yet more green belt land being swallowed up for housing. This is neither sustainable or responsible planning policy. Perhaps the planners need to concentrate on sorting out the towns existing second rate highways infrastructure before inflicting yet more traffic into the town.
