Council pledges to listen to young carers' needs

SOMERSET County Council leader John Osman said a meeting with young carers and their families had “opened eyes on what young carers need, not just what we think they need.”

A new carers panel met last Thursday, and discussed how services for the 350 young carers in Somerset looking after disabled relatives at home could be improved.

Subjects discussed included getting schools to understand young carers' needs better, and getting the council to look again at the carers' priorities.

A second panel meeting will take place later this month.
