Cyclist seriously hurt after collision with lorry Cyclist seriously hurt after collision with lorry

A CYCLIST has life-threatening injuries following a collision with a lorry in Bridgwater this afternoon.

The incident happened in Bath Road, near the Morrison’s distribution centre, at about 3.15pm.

The cyclist was taken to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol and the road has been closed while collision investigators examine the scene.

Any witnesses should contact the road policing unit's collision investigation unit on 101.

I really feel for this cyclist and hope they will be okay. But it must be said after I seen the lorry which was a big artic which was obviously turning in to the Morrisons road this road design is terrible encouraging overtaking we knew somthing like this would happen,.

Likewise, I sincerely hope the cyclist is OK but as MBR Extreme says this road layout was an accident waiting to happen, It was obvious from the outset to all and sundry, apart from the planners.

I really hope the cyclist recovers.
As others have said, the road layout is pathetic.
Why do we have traffic lights that encourage drivers to overtake and cut in as soon as they can.

While I'm here, Bristol road roundabout near Gerbers.
What a joke that area is,all these pathetic drivers who come down the outside lane ( coming towards town) and then cut in past the roundabout.
A message to you, IT'S YOU THAT ARE CAUSING THE TAILBACKS.
If you just stayed in the right lane the traffic would flow. Idiots.

Sad news about the cyclist being hurt today, this was only a matter of time with such a ridiculous junction layout, the 2nd overtaking lane at the lights is far too short and encourages drivers to overtake at speed and cut others up. Morrisons should have been made to sort the road infrastructure out ontop the Bristol Road (which they are currently doing) BEFORE they were allowed to open for business....cart before the horse, i think! I work in the express park and live on westonzoyland road, it can take upto half an hour for me to get home after work and I hate it. I will join the back of the queue on the roundabout and not cut in as people pull onto Bristol road, and nothing irritates me more then seeing people cutting in and pushing. I am one of those drivers who won't let you cut! I would rather you drive into the side of me then let you in! I would love to be able to cycle to work but I don't feel safe cycling on bridgwater's roads. Maybe after today someone will look at making Bridgwater bike friendly! It will cut down on traffic and maybe mean the roads won't jam up so often! Just an idea! X

Last Saturday I was driving down over the motorway bridge into Bridgwater behind a lady driving a people carrier as we approached the lights at the Morrisons turning our lights were green as we got nearer the lights a lorry pulled straight across the road turning right into Bridgwater the lady driving the people carrier had smoke coming out of her tyres where she braked so hard to stop. The lorry had come through a red light from Morrisons had the drivers on the Bath road been speeding the outcome would have been so different.Yes the road markings the other side of the road are ridiculous. Why didnt they just put a lane to turn left and the other lane to carry straight on.Lets face it the road structure around Bridgwater is a joke !!!!! The council dont care as long as money is going in their account.

I am sorry the cyclist got hurt and I wish him a speedy recovery.But the standard of cycling in Bridgwater is appalling
and I'm surprised there are not many more such accidents The worst thing they are guilty off, is undertaking, if you are going to overtake a vehicle you do it on the right not the left as most of the cyclist in Bridgwater seem to do. Their standard of riding needs to improve or more

How can you blame the cyclist you don't know nothing about what happened you insensitive idiot,just for the record cyclists sometimes have to make sudden moves which look dangerous to on lookers just to avoid being hit off, please don't turn this thread into a attack on cyclists again, it seems someone has lost their life so have some respect.

Dreadful news my thoughts go out to the cyclist and his family. I believe there is quite often a degree of unnecessary insensitivity on this forum as demonstrated by some comments made above. Wherever the fault lies what this incident demonstrates is the need for better and safer cycle routes across the town both Bristol Road and Bath Road can be quite terrifying to cycle along. This is why I welcomed the £3.5 million investment in the cycle route to North Petherton.

My condolences to the family and friends of the cyclist.
Recently in this paper we were told that plans had been renewed for a road from Taunton Road to Colley Lane.Presumably the cycle lane to North Petherton is included in them.This accident shows the need for the cycle lane to start in the middle of town. There should be cycle lanes on all major roads in and out of Bridgwater.

I have to agree with MBR Extreme about the insensitivity of Cameraman's comment. Not only is it a callous comment in light of the awful news about this accident, but to tar all cyclists with the same brush is very wrong. There are an as many car and van drivers driving badly on our roads as there are cyclists who's cycling skills may need improving! As the parent of a child injured on his bicycle by a driver who shot a red light I personally find his comment rather offensive and certainly highly crass.
My thoughts are with the cyclists family this morning at this terribly sad time for them. They need to know that the vast majority of people will not share the same thoughts as Cameraman, and even if they do will have more tact than to share them on here.

As has been said in other threads on here about road structures in and around our town. Somerset County Council Highways dept do not care about roads here for any other reason other than what they can squeeze through for the easiest cost to them and not any practical or safe option. From the comments before this one it is obvious to me that there is a problem with the junction. I haven't been that way for ages so don't know it myself.

When I got to cameraman's comment I was disgusted, how can someone be so sick as to generalize cyclists like this?

This isn't the first time there has been a report on this website about problems with trucks and cyclists at this junction it is clearly too late for this unfortunate person but something MUST be done to help the safety of everyone on this junction.

My thoughts and condolenses are with the family and such tragic news no matter who was to blame. The worst thing is knowing that it was an accident waiting to happen, the number of near misses I have seen alone and the number of lorries that churn out like an army of ants at the new Morrisons depot. The worst thing is that it is only going to get worse as the new hospital sorry eyesore that is being built and the proposed road layout is not going to help either. I am not going to turn this into a hospital thread thats another debate, but please address the lane that serves no purpose other than to allow people to race infront of vehicles and then cut back in. Get rid of it would be better but if you have to have it at least make it longer its not long enough and is too near the junction to turn right into Bower. We need to do something before anymore lives are lost.

best wishes go out to the cyclist but i would like to point out . since living near to the morrisons distribution centre i have had near misses with cyclist just coming straight of the pavement into the road without looking,also have noted wearing hoodies and wearing head fones so it has unfortunately been an accident waiting to happen

What a human cost for the deferment of the builing of the overbridge into Morrions RegionalDistribution site. Planners should take note of this tragic occurance. The infrastruce should be in place first.
I noticed whilst passing this junction today that an articulated lorry whilst turning left into Bath Road had the trailer rear wheels mounted the pavement.

my deepest sympathy goes out to the family it is a sad loss to all that knew him and i would just like to add that no matter what actually happened or whos fault it was no one should be slated on the net if anyone should be slated its all the drivers that went past that would of seen it happen and didnt stop but i do agree the road layout there is really bad but my thoughts also goes out to the lorry driver as i seen first hand yesterday the state he was in so plz lets all think about what he is going through as well :(

Our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss.
Id like to ask that people spare the family a thought, be considerate with your comments towards their son and the lorry driver, lets not assume what happened, lets wait.
We are a family that has experienced a tradegy like this, and believe me negativity is the last thing they need to hear.

I agree the road layout has been designed badly, just as the new road layout at silver fish, funded by Morrisons.
The council are not interested in our concerns, neither is our local MP, both just ignore correspondence. If the road layout was to blame for this collision i hope they sit up and take notice that a young man has lost his life.

But it`s about time Somerset C.C look 2 spend money on roads and other improvements.

I think it's a question making sure the money they do spend is spent on road systems that are safe - not spending money on the system like the one in bath road and dare I say Silver Fish which is another accident waiting to happen.

10 Years they say until a bridge is built taking the traffic from morrisons to the bristol road instead of through kings down and out on the bath road. You can actually count more than one lorry a minute using this road that many mothers do to take there children to school. This has a been a big concern for me since when i moved here in november. The lorries swing round these bends so fast and use the opposite side of the road if a child should run out then the lorry would never stop in time. As i said 10 years they have to build this bridge, a completely ridiculous time frame. There should be cycle lanes, lorry lanes, bus lanes and idiot lanes! I feel deeply for those who are suffering from this unfortunate accident

Firstly condolences to the family and friends of this young man.
Why does it take a tragic accident like this for something to be done, we live on the bath road bawdrip side and the lorries that come past sometimes are doing more than the 40mph speed limit and some of these are morrison drivers. You take your life in your hands if you try and pull out cars are just as bad so i'm not just blaming the lorries but you also know when lorries go past the house as it shakes.
They should of got the bridge built before they were allowed to open, my husband cycles, he says its a nightmare constant lorries passing by him along bath road.
There have been too many tragic accidents in bridgwater in the last 2 weeks lets hope we have no more.
