PEOPLE in the Burnham and Highbridge area are being given a fresh chance to have their say on the positioning of underground power lines for the proposed new Hinkley Point nuclear power station.

National Grid has begun a new consultation to identify issues surrounding a proposed 50-mile stretch of pylons to link Hinkley Point C with Avonmouth.

Campaigners objected to the company’s initial proposals, arguing placing cables and pylons above ground would spoil the Somerset Levels.

The objections have prompted National Grid to consider placing parts of the power line route underground and it is currently seeking feedback from residents, who can now access area-specific route maps on its website.

Paul Hipwell, chairman of campaign group No Moor Pylons, said: “I think it’s good that National Grid are listening to what people want and we feel the entire route should be put underground, as it already is in cities.

“We bury all water and gas pipelines – why not electricity? The cost to bury the entire route is less than £1 per year per household.

“That is a price well worth paying to protect the stunning Somerset countryside we all love and enjoy as it’s not just parts of it that are beautiful, it’s all of it.”

Project manager Peter Bryant said the consultation aimed to help reduce the potential impact of the new connection.

He added: “We want to hear about the places that matter to people.

“Hearing their views on where they play sport or walk their dogs, information about schools or favourite views can be added to our maps and will help shape our plans.”

The latest consultation runs until July 23 but National Grid says there will be further consultations before it submits final proposals to the Planning Inspectorate next year.
