PEOPLE turned out in force to donate more than 500 books to Watchet Library as part of a National Library Day event on Saturday.
The place was buzzing as library-users old and new joined the librarian, members of Watchet Library Friends and several local authors who donated signed copies of their books in support of the facility.
Veteran writer Paul Johnson has been coming to the area for years and was represented by his son Cosmo, who said: “Paul has written over 50 books in the last 60 years or so, and has done all his research for them in libraries, so they are vital to him.”
Resident Pat Wilks donated a signed copy of her autobiography With a Gladsome Mind.
She said: “Since returning to live in this area, I have been pleased to rejoin Watchet Library. I have happy memories of using it when my children were small.
“It is a very valuable resource for our whole community.”
On the morning Watchet Library Friends donated a framed, hand coloured print of an original drawing of the library building by local artist Nick Cotton.
The building was originally a lifeboat house, and was donated in 1953 by Leonard Laity Stoate (a local mill owner) to be a library for Watchet residents.
