REPAIR work on a collapsed sewer in Berrow Road, Burnham, could be completed by the end of next week, it has been announced.

Wessex Water engineers have been repairing the sewer for a number of weeks since the collapse but a number of excavations have revealed the pipe was more damaged than first thought.

The firm has chosen to reline it using specialist liner imported from the continent and work will start today (Thursday) to insert it.

The road will also be resurfaced once work is finished.

Wessex Water spokesman Ian Drury said: “We are aware of the impact that the Berrow Road closure is having on the local community and motorists and have therefore explored alternative ways to carry out the repairs.

“By relining the sewer we will be able to complete our work sooner while at the same time extend the life of the pipe for around 100 years.

“We have written to local residents to apologise for the on-going emergency repair work, which has taken significantly longer than expected due to the condition of the sewer.”
