THE Mayor has called for people to turn in the “disrespectful” yob who daubed graffiti on a war memorial in Taunton town centre.

The Burma Memorial, in front of the Market House, has been cleaned up after becoming one of several targets in recent weeks.

But spray-painted obscenities are still visible elsewhere, including Whirligig Lane, Magdalene Lane and near the Brewhouse and Morrisons.

Taunton Deane Mayor Cllr Steve Brooks said: “I’m shocked.

“The Burma Memorial is a tribute to the many who gave their lives for their country – this shows nothing but disrespect.

“I hope the culprits can be found.”

Witnesses should call Crimestoppers on 0800-555111.

The Rev Rod Corke, vicar of St Mary Magdalene Church, said: “It’s just so disrespectful.

“The whole problem of graffiti horrifies me – once you let it get hold it gets worse and worse.

“It’s dreadful for tourism visitors and I’m appalled at it being around the church in a historic area of Taunton – some of the words are really offensive.”

Taunton Town Centre Manager Graham Love said: “The Town Centre Company is working with Taunton Deane Council and the Avon and Somerset probation trust and businesses to ensure graffiti doesn’t spoil the look and appearance of the town for shoppers and residents.”

Deane workers have removed some of the graffiti in Whirligig Lane and near Morrisons, with the complainants footing the bill.
