Flash flooding has been reported in Truro at the same time as the Met Office issues a severe weather warning for Cornwall.

Heavy rain following thunder and lightning earlier today has seen some areas of the city hit by rising water levels.

St Austell Street, Old Bridge Street and Tregolls Road are all reportedly affected.

One Twitter user wrote: “Wow never seen such heavy rain! Outside of house is under a foot of water and am now trying to clear it all!”

Cornwall Council has said that its highways department is on the scene and water was beginning to recede.

The Met Office has put the county on ‘yellow’ alert, warning to ‘be aware.’ However, it is forecasting the rain to clear by 7pm today, when grey skies will make way for brilliant sunshine.

This is forecast to continue into the weekend, with just a brief shower early tomorrow.
