Cornwall’s newest dementia facility is to be officially opened by Truro and Falmouth MP Sarah Newton next Wednesday.

Mrs Newton will be spending time at The Penlee Unit, an important part of Roseland Parc Retirement Village, in Tregony.

Here she will be meeting staff and the first residents, and unveiling a plaque to mark the occasion.

The Grade II Listed building that houses the Penlee Unit was formerly Penlee Nursing Home.

When the residents moved to the new purpose built facility in the grounds of Roseland Parc three years ago, it was left empty.

Now, after six months of renovation and remodelling work, the specialist unit has been developed.

The unit features a sitting room decorated much as a war-time room would have been, to reflect the fact many dementia sufferers have very vivid childhood memories and feel comfortable in those surroundings.

There is also an enclosed sensory garden.

The unit has 18 private bedrooms all with en suite facilities. While some services are shared with the neighbouring retirement village, the specially trained staff all work exclusively within the unit.

There are also a number of specialists, including a psychologist, occupational therapist, music therapist and physiotherapist.
