A section of the A30 has been closed in both directions due to a tanker leaking potentially harmful chemicals across the road.
The incident is taking place at Whiddon Down near Okehampton and involves a 22-tonne articulated tanker.
Police were called out at around 10.20am.
A police spokesman said: “The tanker contains potentially harmful chemicals and has necessitated the full closure of the A30 in both directions whilst Devon Fire and Rescue Service deal with the incident.”
He said this would involve another articulated vehicle travelling to the scene, onto which the chemical load can be transferred.
“This could take some time and police are advising motorists to avoid the area,” added the spokesman.
