Making sure that pensioners stay active in their twilight years is the Carrick U3A Group.

Members, the majority of which are over the age of 60, meet regularly for different activities and to learn new skills, from science to salsa.

They are hosting an open day at Perranwell Village Hall from 10am on May 4, to encourage more people to join.

Ed Tozer, speaking on behalf of the group, said: “The aim is to invite anybody who is interested to meet us and see at first hand most of the 60-plus types of activity which we organise ourselves and offer members, usually at no cost over and above the annual membership fee.

“Whilst we have no age limits, upper or lower, for membership, most of our members are retired or semi-retired, and it is a key part of the U3A ethos that retired people who remain active and maintain a variety of interests are more likely to stay happier and healthier, and may thereby impose fewer demands on health and welfare agencies and contribute more to society at large.”

Among the activities at the open day will be outdoor croquet and petanque, weather permitting.

The University of the Third Age (U3A) has 18 organisations in Cornwall, with the Carrick group having over 800 members.
