VIDEO: Footage reopens "Beast of Sedgemoor" debate

THE debate about the existence of the “Beast of Sedgemoor” has been reopened.

Malcolm Carson of Westonzoyland has shown the Mercury video footage which he says shows a large cat chasing birds in a field near the village's pumping station.

Malcolm was out enjoying a Sunday afternoon stroll with his family when they spotted the animal, and his son-in-law Clive Bailye recorded footage on his mobile phone (click on the related link below to see the footage and decide for yourself.) Malcolm said: “It was stationary and at first glance we thought it was a deer or a very large dog. We then noted the animal was black and had a long tail which curved towards the ground and curled up the tip.

“The way it moved was definitely the way a cat moves when stalking. It had its head low and its haunch high as it approached the birds with increasing speed.

“At the last minute the birds flew up and the cat appeared angry or frustrated as it flicked its tail and stood there.”

Mr Carson took photos of what appear to be large paw prints spanning five inches. He said the creature appeared to resemble a puma or a jaguar.

I do enjoy a local news story illustrated by a man pointing at nothing.

Indeed outcider couldn't agree more.

Next story will be "Mrs Dysdale has hung her washing out on a Wednesday rather than a Monday" :-)

I guess it is better than depressing stories.

Nice to see that everyone is taking this so seriously. :-)

It was not a) A heron, or b) a labrador (with or without a catlike gait).
It was a large black cat.

I'm the guy who saw it and I'm sure of what I saw. I'm now busy making lots of T shirts for sale with "The Beast is back!" £60 each or £80 with a pawprint. Apply within..

If there is a large wild cat roaming free, and liking regular meals, won"t farmers be finding occasional sheep carcases, etc?.

The last thing I need is 'five minutes of fame' thanks, Bald Carl.
We thought carefully about saying anything to anyone before deciding that it would be best to report the sighting. It's not a Yeti or the Loch Ness monster - it's a large black cat. They've been seen for years all over the UK. Why should this area be any different to Bodmin, Scotland or Dartmoor?
We guessed that the more cerebrally challenged might decide to take the micky. You will note that there are others here, who have either heard of a similar sighting, or have direct experience of something similar. I can see now why many have kept these sightings to themselves. Anyway....T shirts still for sale £60 each or £80 with a paw print.... :-)
