Cornwall Council has agreed to spend up to £120,000 looking into building a Stadium for Cornwall.

Cabinet members met this morning at County Hall and voted unanimously to continue exploring whether the stadium – which could create up to 400 jobs – would be viable and build up a final business case.

The cabinet noted the findings of a provisional feasibility study, which showed the most suitable site for the stadium as Langarth Farm, Threemilestone, near Truro.

A petition with nearly 12,000 signatures of people in favour of the stadium was received by council leader Alec Robertson and Carolyn Rule, cabinet member for economy and regeneration, shortly before the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting Mrs Rule said the project would encourage more people to take part in sports and be accessible to all.

“This project aims to build a stadium that will be an inspirational multi-use stadium and visitor complex built to exemplar environmental standards which maximises the economic benefits to Cornwall,” she said.

Speaking about the provisional feasibility study, Mrs Rule added: “What it has not done is give me the detail of precisely how this will be achieved - I have got more questions that need answers before we can move to the next stage.”

Cabinet members heard that the work going forward will look at a range of options over whether funding could be available, primarily based on private investment.

A full report from the meeting will appear in next Wednesday’s Packet.
