PLANS for 12 new affordable homes in East Huntspill have been given the thumbs up by councillors.

Sedgemoor District Council's development control committee on Tuesday agreed to grant delegated permission to build ten houses and two flats on Hackness Farm near Church Road.

The application was submitted by the South Western Housing Society, which expressed its interest in building the development after a consultation in November last year.

At the meeting, Bruce Poole, East Huntspill Parish Council clerk, and Huntspill and Pawlett ward councillor Paul Herbert gave their backing to the plans.

Cllr Bob Filmer, the meeting's chairman, said he was not comfortable with the plans, but added: “It's a good development in East Huntspill.

“I don't like the layout at all but if the village is saying that's that what they want to have, maybe we go with what the village wants.”

Cllr Tony Grimes said: “When I first saw the plans I thought I didn't like it. The more I look at it the more I am coming round to it.”

Burnham South ward councillor Mike Mansfield said the development designs made it look like “Butlins” while Cllr Dawn Hill dismissed the plans and said they were “not compatible” with the rest of East Huntspill.

Cllr Alan Bradford said: “At the moment, it's like you've got a good horse but you need a decent cart to pull along.

“Good on the parish council for pursuing these things.”
